Visit

On the 27th of December I went to various museums, churches and old houses. From all the places, I visited only in one of them I found what I needed. I went to the National museum of Archaeology, Victor Pasmore gallery, Casa Rocca Piccola and Wignacourt museum.

  1. Carved wood and silvered altar candlesticks
  2. The Annunciation of the Virgin
  3. Drawing for the Reliquary of St Paul’s Collegiate Church
  4. Carved wood silvered and gilded revolving exposition throne backed by brilliant rays
  5. Maltese silver shoe buckles

These are carved wood and silver altar candlesticks. They are also plates with a bit of gold. They are also all the same. They have an organic structure. These candlesticks are thin in the middle and tick at the top and bottom.

‘The Annunciation of the virgin’ is a structure mostly platted with gold. It is very detailed and has fine designs. it is also brightly colored. Every structure in it is laced with gold. The artist also manged to show emotion trough the figures in the structure.

In ‘Drawing for the Reliquary of St Paul’s Collegiate Church’ we see a design of a Reliquary. even though its a sketch/ painting it is still a design since the artist is showing how the designer with design it. It is all in gold and just has a bit of color. The rest is left blank, just sketched with a pencil.

This ‘Carved wood silvered and gilded revolving exposition throne backed by brilliant rays’  is all in gold, and just has a touch of red in the crown. It is very detailed and made up of both geometrical and organic designs.

These ‘Maltese silver shoe buckles’ are silver platted and covered with jewels. They have a simple design yet its beautiful. They have a rod in the middle for the material to hold on to.

All five paintings where found from the Wignacourt Museum. These designs have came to my attention since they are all different yet they all pass a message to their audience. They where interesting to examine and study.

Art Nouveau

Art Nouveau means new art. It first started vogue between the 1890s and the 1914s. This movement was popular, mostly, throughout Europe. Fashion wise, this style focuses on, mainly, in various decorative  arts designs and architecture. The movement ended the historical styles of the 19th century and developed something new for their style where they had an elegant, proud and graceful appearance.

The decorative aspect of Art Nouveau was essential to the designs of many artists. Many artists drew their inspiration for this style mainly from organic and geometric forms. This also means that nature was a huge part of it. Many decorative patterns where very flat. Designs were leafs and organic forms where done, rounded shapes are included. They are also used for their decorative style for example, the hair and curvy bodies of the female body. The characteristic of this style are patterns like lines, which had to be draw in an elegant manner. Many times this would be done for flowers, buds, wings and any natural object found. These patterns were also included in architecture, facades and interior. Apart from that, Art Nouveau also influenced the fashion industry. Most of the architecture became surrounded with this decorative style. The most influential artists in the Art Nouveau movement are: the Scottish architect and designer, Charles Rennie Mackintosh who was known for his geometric line. The Belgian architects Henry van de Velde and Victor Horta  who are known for their fine structures. Yet the artist who influenced me is, Alfons Mucha. He’s a florist painter, where in almost all of his painting, he shows delicacy and elegance to the women and also the flowers.

This painting was done by Mucha. Just like I said before he shows grace and elaance in his artworks. The woman painted poise, showing an elegant look. Her face is painted very fine and seems to be blushing a bit. Even the finery in the dress is show, like the way she holds her dress, including the bouquet of flowers.

The movement took away the traditional way of the arts and developed new style which appeared as a free arts, which meant that artists where free of painting how they felt.  This can be seen in various works in such as paintings, sculptures, furniture and in many architecture. The Art Nouveau movement lost their attention after Art Deco came in fashion, somewhere around the 1920’s, but then in the 1960’s, Art Nouveau was brought again in fashion and it is now considered as the most influential and inspiring style for modernism.

Futurism

Futurism started to develop in Italy. Marretti was the person who published the Movement of Futurism on the front page of Paris newspaper ‘Le Figaro’. This happened on the 20th February 1909. The Futurist opened a new section to art and design.
The Futurist were very skilled artists. They could nearly accomplish everything in art. This included ceramics, paintings, sculpture, theater, interior design, music and architecture.  Their main idea was how to create speed. By this I mean that they tried their best to make art and design a lot easier. They also showed movement and energy into art.  The futurists were inspired by speed, machinery, technology, and noises of the cities. It was first rejected and it wasn’t even considered for their essential aspects of the classic past or even the new. The artists of futurism were mostly successful but much of the ideas of the movement were thought through writing and several statements, which where by the movement and were also published.  The things they used were taken from everyday life and showed movement. For example, people running in different directions, cars driving at high speed, and many more. There are many artists who left a huge mark on the movement of futurism, some of them are: Umberto Boccioni, Carlo Cara, Giacomo balla, and Valmir Tatlin.  In their paintings and designs they mostly used light colors while creating dots and geometric designs.  The futurists also tried to compare and contrat different aspects of the art and design found in the same movement. The only problem was that they partially overlapped.

This is a painting that really inspired me. It is made up of many geometrical designs and has a bit of organic designs too. It shows building nearly falling apart, yet at the same time its like they are still steady. In my opinion, I think the artist wanted to show that buildings fall but they can always be rebuilt again. Yet at the same time they can be fixed.

On the other hand this is a fashion runway. The fashion designers who created these clothes where inspired by Futurism. In fact even the colors used are different including the designs.
